Write a prompt with a clear output contract
By SI100x · Published
A prompt is more useful when the desired result is concrete. Instead of asking for a good answer, describe the task, the boundaries and the shape of the output you will inspect.
Try this exercise
- Use a small invented input and state the task in direct language. Ask for only the information needed, such as a list of questions that remain unanswered.
- Describe the expected fields or sections and what to do when information is missing. Include an example when it clarifies the result rather than simply making the prompt longer.
- Try several inputs and compare the outputs. Check the actual content and format; do not assume that asking for a structure guarantees every response will follow it.
Check your result
The contract should be clear enough that you can identify a failure. Validate outputs before another part of the application relies on them, and avoid placing secrets in the prompt.
