Separate a source quotation from an AI interpretation
By SI100x · Published
When a generated answer uses source material, readers need to distinguish what the source says from what the assistant infers. A learning exercise can make that distinction visible without requiring a large document collection.
Try this exercise
- Write a short fictional policy containing three clear facts and one unanswered question. Ask the assistant to answer questions using that policy.
- Require each supported answer to identify the relevant passage. For unanswered questions, ask for an explicit statement that the source does not establish the answer.
- Inspect the response manually. Compare every quotation with the source and label interpretations as interpretations rather than making them look like quoted facts.
Check your result
An answer should not turn an absence of evidence into a confident claim. A citation is useful only when the cited passage actually supports the associated statement.
