Project planning
Scope a first project to one complete user journey
By SI100x · Published
A small finished journey is easier to learn from than a large collection of half-working screens. Choose a task with a clear starting point, result and recovery path.
Try this exercise
- Describe the user and the task in one sentence. For a reading-list project, the first journey could be adding a book and seeing it in the list.
- Include a successful input, a validation mistake and an empty state in the scope. Leave unrelated features, such as sharing and recommendations, for a later iteration.
- Build the journey from the visible interface through the saved result. Check that refreshing the page does not create a misleading impression of persistence.
Check your result
You should be able to demonstrate the whole task without skipping an unfinished step. Keep a separate backlog so new ideas do not silently expand the definition of the first version.
