Project planning

Break a project into verifiable milestones

By SI100x · Published

A milestone should describe a result that you can demonstrate. Smaller verifiable milestones make it easier to notice a missing dependency before the whole project depends on it.

Try this exercise

  1. Start with a read-only screen using invented data. The next milestone can add one controlled input and its visible result.
  2. Add persistence, validation and permissions where the project requires them. At each stage, check a normal case and a failure before building more features on top.
  3. Keep notes about what each milestone proves and what it does not. A local form demonstration, for example, does not prove that a production email provider delivered a message.

Check your result

Each milestone should end with a working checkpoint and an honest list of limitations. Use the evidence to choose the next task instead of treating the number of completed files as progress.
