Project planning

Choose sample data that challenges the layout

By SI100x · Published

Sample data is part of design. If every example is short, complete and perfectly formatted, a practice project can look ready while ordinary real-world values still break it.

Try this exercise

  1. Create a short name, a very long title, an item with a missing optional field and an empty collection. Use clearly invented values rather than borrowing private records.
  2. Display the samples together and check spacing, wrapping and identifying information. Look for assumptions that every item has an image or exactly one line of text.
  3. Test sorting and filtering with the same samples. Keep the displayed result consistent when a field is missing or a query returns nothing.

Check your result

The interface should remain understandable across the samples. A challenge dataset is not an excuse to accept malformed required data; use validation and sensible fallbacks for different responsibilities.
