Practice handling an AI answer that is uncertain

By SI100x · Published

A useful assistant should have a way to communicate uncertainty. In a practice project, design that behavior deliberately instead of hiding uncertainty behind confident wording.

Try this exercise

  1. Choose a task with some incomplete inputs, such as extracting an event date from notes. Write cases with a complete date, a partial date and conflicting dates.
  2. Decide when the interface should ask a follow-up or present an unresolved field. Keep the original input available so a reviewer can understand the uncertainty.
  3. Evaluate whether the generated answer follows that behavior. Reject or flag outputs that invent a missing year or silently choose between conflicting facts.

Check your result

The user should know what is known, what is uncertain and what information would resolve it. Do not treat a model’s confidence wording as a measured probability unless you have a sound method for doing so.
