Practice a lesson twice without copying the second time

By SI100x · Published

Following an example can make a new skill feel familiar before you can use it independently. A second attempt with a small variation shows which decisions you understand and which steps you remember only by location.

Try this exercise

  1. Complete the guided example once and check that the result behaves as described. Save a working checkpoint before experimenting.
  2. Close the example and rebuild a smaller version from your own notes. Change the sample data or layout so you must make at least one decision yourself.
  3. Compare the two versions. Identify a decision you can explain and one you had to look up. Add the explanation to your notes, then repeat just the uncertain part.

Check your result

Success means explaining the behavior as well as producing it. Looking up a detail is normal; repeatedly copying a whole solution is a signal to shrink the exercise and focus on one concept.
