Project planning
Estimate learning work with uncertainty visible
By SI100x · Published
An estimate is a planning aid, not a promise. For unfamiliar work, identify the parts you understand and the dependencies that could change the effort.
Try this exercise
- Break the task into a small visible result, tests and review. Mark unfamiliar integrations separately from work you have already practiced.
- Start with a short investigation when a dependency is uncertain. Use the result to revise the plan before committing the rest of the project to an assumption.
- Compare the estimate with the actual work after the milestone. Record what changed so the next estimate has better evidence.
Check your result
A useful plan explains the uncertainty and the next decision. Avoid promising job readiness or a fixed completion time based solely on how quickly a guided example was completed.
