Ask for coding help with a small reproducible example
By SI100x · Published
An instructor can help more effectively when a question includes the smallest example that still fails. The goal is to make the problem visible, while keeping passwords, private records and unrelated code out of the conversation.
Try this exercise
- Describe the intended behavior in one sentence. Include what you actually observed and the last change you made before the problem appeared.
- Reduce the example until extra screens, data and features are removed. Use invented sample values and preserve the input that triggers the problem.
- Share the relevant error text and steps to reproduce it. Explain what you already tried and what changed, including attempts that made no difference.
Check your result
Someone else should be able to follow the steps and recognize the same failure. If they cannot, improve the example before adding more guesses. Never paste account secrets or full private environment files into a help request.
