Review a page’s headings as a navigation outline
By SI100x · Published
Headings help readers find the structure of a page. Treat the heading list as an outline of the information, rather than choosing heading levels only because their default font size looks convenient.
Try this exercise
- Write the main page heading and the names of its major sections before styling. Place subtopics under the section they explain.
- Inspect the heading outline without reading the rest of the page. Replace headings used only for isolated numbers or decorative labels with ordinary text.
- Check dynamic tabs and empty states. The currently displayed content should have an understandable structure, and field labels should be associated with their inputs.
Check your result
The outline should describe the page’s task and sections. A heading review does not replace testing the rest of accessibility, but it can reveal confusing structure before it becomes part of every shared page.
