Make a layout readable on a narrow screen
By SI100x · Published
Responsive design is more than shrinking a desktop screenshot. On a phone, the order of information and the space needed for touch and reading can change which layout is most useful.
Try this exercise
- Begin with one column and put the main task near the top. Add wider layouts only where extra space makes comparison or navigation easier.
- Use long sample text and check that cards, headings and controls wrap. Look for horizontal scrolling caused by a single fixed-width element.
- Open every panel that can change the layout, including navigation and validation messages. Check both portrait width and a wider view rather than testing only a blank page.
Check your result
The page should remain usable without sideways scrolling for ordinary text. A compact viewport is not an excuse to hide error messages or remove the main action. Review actual screenshots alongside automated checks.
