Keep form input after a failed request
By SI100x · Published
Losing a completed form after a network error can turn a small failure into a frustrating restart. Practice retaining the user’s work while clearly explaining which operation did not complete.
Try this exercise
- Build a local form and make its first submission fail in a controlled exercise. Retain every non-sensitive field and display a readable error near the submission area.
- Allow a second attempt and show that it is pending. Prevent accidental duplicate submission while the request is already running.
- After success, decide whether to clear the form or keep a receipt view. Make that behavior deliberate and distinguish it from a component rerender or page navigation.
Check your result
A user should not have to retype a long message to recover from a transient failure. Avoid storing sensitive fields more widely or for longer than the task requires.
