Debugging and testing
Use screenshots to review states, not just pages
By SI100x · Published
A screenshot of the default page misses menus, errors and populated states. Visual review is more useful when it follows the changes a user can make to the interface.
Try this exercise
- List the visible states of the affected component: closed and open, empty and populated, pending and error where relevant. Capture the states that change layout or readability.
- Review desktop and narrow-screen images at readable size. Look for text contrast, overlap, clipping and controls that are difficult to find.
- Record the route, viewport and state for each image. Mark unavailable states honestly and pair screenshots with interaction checks for the actions they show.
Check your result
A visual pass should describe what was reviewed, not imply coverage of every possible screen. Automated overflow checks can help locate problems, but they do not replace inspecting the actual rendered result.
